Bharat Forge Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul and indigenous development complex at Visakhapatnam.

The announcement was made during the Aerospace & Defence Investors Conclave held in Puttaparthy, Andhra Pradesh, on May 19, 2026. The project will be developed through Bharat Forge’s Aerospace division and is aimed at strengthening India’s naval self-reliance capabilities under the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

According to the company, the proposed facility will be spread across approximately 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. The complex will be co-located with the Naval Dockyard, INS Eksila and Eastern Naval Command headquarters at Visakhapatnam.

Bharat Forge said the project will be implemented in phases. Phase 1 will focus on setting up a full marine gas turbine repair and overhaul complex, including restoration of blades, vanes and combustion liners, component manufacturing, non-destructive examination laboratories and a 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard.

Phase 2 will involve the development and assembly of indigenous marine gas turbines, including hot test cell infrastructure and propulsion ratings. The company said this will mark the first time such a private-sector marine gas turbine development capability is established in India. The facility is also expected to function as a regional research and development hub for friendly foreign navies.

The company added that the project is expected to create around 750 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the initiative would strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing and help Andhra Pradesh emerge as a major aerospace and defence production hub.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the state aims to lead India’s industrial and innovation-driven growth through infrastructure and manufacturing-led development.

Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, said the project would help reduce dependence on overseas supply chains for marine gas turbines and support India’s naval capabilities with indigenous infrastructure.

The company noted that marine gas turbines form the propulsion backbone of the Indian Navy’s frontline surface combatants and said global supply chain disruptions in recent years have affected fleet repair and operational readiness cycles.
