Asian markets today: Nikkei, Taiwan, HSI trade higher on Tuesday, May 12; Kospi, NZX 50 and Shenzhen decline

Asian markets showed a mixed trend on Tuesday, May 12, with several major regional indices trading higher while China, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia witnessed pressure. The Nikkei led gains among key Asian indices, while Kospi and NZX 50 were among the major laggards.
Japan’s Nikkei was trading at 62,805.44, up 387.56 points or 0.62%, making it one of the strongest performers in the Asian market pack. Taiwan also traded higher at 41,982.4, gaining 192.34 points or 0.46%. Malaysia’s index was up 7.7 points or 0.44% at 1,753.01, while Hong Kong’s HSI rose 111.1 points or 0.42% to 26,517.94.
India’s Nifty 50 was unchanged at 23,815.85, while Singapore’s STI was nearly flat but positive at 4,943.06, gaining 0.29 points or 0.01%. Nepal’s SETI also traded higher, rising 9.2 points or 0.62% to 1,498.49.
On the downside, New Zealand’s NZX 50 fell 185.17 points or 1.4% to 13,025.31, making it the weakest index in the list. South Korea’s Kospi declined 83.53 points or 1.07% to 7,738.71. China-linked indices also remained under pressure, with Shenzhen down 86.325 points or 0.54% at 15,812.977, Shanghai lower by 10.535 points or 0.25% at 4,214.486, and SGX-CNBC China Growth slipping 2.915 points or 0.16% to 1,773.409.
Australia’s ASX 200 also traded in the red at 8,675.6, down 26.2 points or 0.3%.
